Caption
The sitter was the third son of the Rev. Harry Grey (1783-1860) and Frances Elizabeth Ellis (d.1846). In 1849 he married Harriet White (1829-1880), who was the great-niece of the famous naturalist, the Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793) of Selbourne. Their son William Grey, (1850-1910) became 9th Earl of Stamford.
