Caption
Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke was the son of Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, (d.1600/1) and Mary Sidney, his 3rd wife (the sister of Sir Philip Sidney). He married, as his first wife, Lady Susan Vere and, as his second wife, Lady Anne Clifford, the Cumberland heiress and widow of the 3rd Earl of Dorset. In 1608 he was made a Knight of the Garter and Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James I. He was Lord Chamberlain to the household of Charles I, but deserted the King’s cause during the Civil War. This or another version was engraved by Hollar as by Van Dyck in 1642.
