Summary
Oil painting on oak panel, Charles I (1600-1649), after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A half-length portrait of Charles I, turned to left, head slightly facing, gazing at the spectator, falling lace collar, dark cloak, embroidered with the star of the Garter over his left shoulder, and the blue sash of the Garter, moustache, pointed beard, locks of dark hair falling over his left shoulder, a pendant pearl earring in his left ear. A pair with NT 932308. The original painting, dated 1637, is now in Dresden (1038). Dendrochronological analysis conducted by the Jordaens Van Dyck Panel Paintings Project (JVDPPP) revealed that the trees used for this painting's oak panel supports were estimated to have been felled after 1628 (planks 1 and 3) and 1634 (plank 2) (Dr Justin Davies, Dendrochronological analysis report, JVDPPP, 2021). No panel maker's or Antwerp guild brand marks were found on the reverse of the painting.
