Caption
The sitter was the second son of Henry Grey, 1st Earl of Stamford (1599-1673) and Lady Anne Cecil (1596-1672), daughter of the 2nd Earl of Exeter. He married Anne Willoughby, daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby, and heiress of the Risley Hall estate. He was M.P. for Derby, and a prolific compiler of debates. His notes were printed in 1769 as Debates of the House of Commons 1667-1694. He presented what is reputedly the biggest chalice in England (9 inches in height, and 15 inches around the rim) to the church of All Saints, in Dale Abbey.

A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, almost in profile to left, gazing at the spectator, in black cloak and lawn collar; natural Rossetti-red shoulder-length hair. Second son of the 1st Earl of Stamford.
