Caption
George Grey, 5th Earl of Stamford (1737-1819) was passionate about horses, and built an extra wing to the stable block at Dunham Massey to accommodate them. Boultbee started as a landscape artist, but became a sporting painter. He must have studied the work of Sawrey Gilpin, and Stubbs.

Oil painting on canvas, A Bay Hunter named 'Sir Oliver' by John Boultbee (Osgathorpe 1753 – Liverpool 1812), signed 'J. Boultbee' - (traces of a signature and date behind horse, beneath tree originally dated, but now indistinct ). A bay hunter standing to left in a landscape; a distant river winds among trees. 'Sir Oliver' was foaled in 1800, died in 1830.
