Dating from the beginning of the Little Ice Age, this painting depicts a group of people skating and playing games on the frozen River Rhine. On the right of the painting, groups of people hurry into church. In the foreground is a couple, possibly deciding between pleasure or prayer.

Part of the Hyde Parker Collection, and by descent to Sir Richard Hyde Parker, 12th Baronet; Accepted in Lieu by HM Treasury in 1960 and loaned to the National Trust, Melford Hall; later transferred by the Treasury to the National Trust in 1984.
