Summary
Bell in the Killerton Chapel. The weight of the bell is given as 1358lbs in the press reports, and this equates to 616kg (or 12cwt 0qr 14lbs). The diameter is 1008mm (42”). The note is G, and the full partials are as follows - hum 216.5hz (A-27), prime 384.5 (G-33), tierce 475 (Bb+32), quint 615.5 (Eb-18) and nominal 774.5 (G(2)-21). The frame and fittings are mostly out of sight, but the bell seems to be supported on a four-poster framework rising from the top of the turret above the stairs. Here the circular stairwell becomes a square offset. On this there is a square of timber supporting the legs of the frame which rise up in the four corners. The frame is of oak. The lowest stage is X-braced and carries a floor with a small trapdoor in the centre. The lip of the bell and the clapper assembly can be seen through the trapdoor. Most likely the framework - perhaps X-braced again - continues up above the top of the bell and ends in further square of horizontal timbers carrying a wooden headstock. The bell probably has canons and one assumes it is fixed to its stock by traditional supporting ironwork. All that one can see are the cast-in crown staple inside the top of the bell, an iron clapper with a lever on the side, and a pulley assembly for the rope.
Provenance
Acland - part of chapel finished in 1841 but the bell was added later
