Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Siege of Maastricht, 1673 by Adam Frans van der Meulen (Brussels 1632 – Paris 1690) A bird's-eye view of the fortified town in the plain. A group of horsemen including Louis XIV are watching from the hill in the foreground the progress of the siege. The figure on the white horse represents Louis XIV; that on the spotted the Duke of Monmouth.
Provenance
A picture owned by Lord Clive (sold at Christie's, 14 February 1778, lot 83) (see 1771 inventory in Powys file) is described in the sale catalogue as the Siege of Maastricht by Van der Meulen 'with Louis XIV and general officers in the foreground.' No dimensions are given. This sounds like the picture bought as Lot 83 at this sale by John Parker for 43.1.0. The sale was that of Charles Price, to which were added some capital pictures of a nobleman, deceased'. No indication in Christie copy of sale catalogue to whom Lot 83 belonged but the nobleman could have been Clive; Accepted by the Treasury in part payment of death-duties from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker, 4th Earl of Morley (1877-1951) and transferred to the Trust in 1957.
