Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Sophia Upton (1780-1853), British (English) School,19th century. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated before a red draped curtain. Distant landscape on left. She has dark brown hair under a wide-brimmed black hat with a drooping feather. She wears a dark gown with a big open white collar. A long yellow scarf with a red fringe is tied at the front and hangs loosely. Label on reverse 'Honble. Sophia Upton, daughter of 1st Lord Templeton, born 1780, d.1858'.
Provenance
By descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
