Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Alice Frances Theodora Wythes, Marchioness of Bristol (1875-1957) by Mabel Emily Hankey (d.1943). 1903. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a woman, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white lace dress trimmed with pink flowers and green leaves, a triple pearl necklace. Brown eyes, black hair, florid complexion. Sky background. Signed along bottom edge in purple paint 'Mabel Hankey'. The gold case is engraved 'Alice Francis Theodora Hervey, 1903'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably commissioned from the artist in 1903.
