Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Kezia Tyrell, Mrs Reynolds (d. 1711) not Kezia Hervey, Mrs Thomas Tyrell (1622-1659), British (English) School, circa 1675 -1680. Painted on top right corner: Mrs Kezia Tyrell, March 25 1711. A bust-length portrait of a woman, almost facing, in dark grey chemise, lace at the neck, a red cloak over her left shoulder and right forearm. Dark hair and eyes.
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by the father of the sitter, Thomas Tyrell, inscribed whilst still in that family’s possession (the inscription is unlike any others at Ickworth), and at some point acquired for Ickworth, in the mistaken belief that the sitter was Kezia Hervey, the 1st Earl’s aunt; thence by descent to Frederick William, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863 -1951), on whose death valued for probate; after which, accepted in lieu of tax by H. M. Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
