Caption
The sitter has been painted at the age of 66 in 1683, a year after he was made a baronet. He had bought the Rougham estate in Suffolk in 1680, having made a fortune in Barbados. His dog has ‘Robt Davers’ painted on its collar.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Robert Davers, 1st Bt (1616/17–1684), aged 66, British (English) School, inscribed on plinth at left: Æs 66. / ANo 1683. A three-quarter-length portrait of a middle-aged man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, dark grey and brown hair, fresh complexion, brown eyes. Wearing brown mantle over loose white shirt. Mantle caught with jewelled clasp on right shoulder, rich lace cravat. Left hand rests on dog's head, right on table. Dog has 'Robt. Davers' painted on collar. Seated before pillar with landscape visible on right.
