Caption
The sitter married Mary, heir of the 2nd Lord Jermyn, who died ten days after him, and through whom the Davers acquired Rushbrooke. He was grandfather of Elizabeth Davers, wife of the Earl-Bishop. This is the first of a group of paintings hung at Ickworth, which were purchased by Theodora, 4th Marchioness of Bristol at the dispersal of the contents of Rushbrooke Hall, Suffolk, in the 1920s.

A three-quarter-length portrait of a plump middle-aged man, standing, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a brown coat trimmed with broad and gilt buttons, red waistcoat just visible, white cravat, frilled cuffs and long wig, his left hand on his hip, his right resting on a table of console type, richly carved. Vivid blue landscape, right.

From Rushbrooke, where it was listed by Edmund Farrer, Portraits in Suffolk Houses (West), 1908 (113) [The Rushbrooke Hall Sale, December 10th and 11th 1919];by descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
