Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Called Judith Poley, Lady May (m.1615/16; d.1661), but more probably Miss Judith May, a daughter of Sir Humphrey and Lady May, British (English) School, 1640-1650. Inscribed on the pedestal: The Lady May Maternal Grandmother To John Earl / of Bristol; and above: The Lady Judeth [sic] May. A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, standing to right, wearing a red silk dress with white at neck and cuffs; slashed sleeves; pearl necklace, pearl earrings and ornament in hair; flowers, including a tulip, in her right hand, her left hand resting on the base of a column around which is hung a garland of flowers, including tulips.
Provenance
Presumably via descent to Frederick William, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863–1951), after whose death valued for probate; after which, accepted in lieu of tax on his estate by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
