Summary
Oil painting on panel, Susan Jermyn, Lady Hervey (d.1637), British (English) School, early 17th century. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a woman, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the right, wearing a flat black cap over dark hair, high cream ruff and elaborate lace collar with jewelled necklace and large pendant jewel. Very dark background. Inscribed at top - 'Susan, Lady Hervey, wife of Sr. William Hervey.
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by the sitter’s husband, and thence by descent, until inherited by Frederick William, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), after whose death, valued for probate; after which, accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
