Provenance
Presumably one of the seven pictures celebrating the 'Naval Achievements of the Honourable Commodore Hervey' no doubt originally commissioned by him; left to his mistress, Mrs Nesbitt (d.1824); given or left by her to the Hon. Anne Phipps, Lady Murray; inserted by her into a sale at Robins's Maddox Street Rooms, 17 May 1827, lots 112-118, and either bought at that sale by, or bought in and given/sold by her to her cousin, the Hon. Edmund Phipps (1808-57); his posthumous sale, Christie's, 25 June 1859, lot 64: bought by Farrer; thence by descent to the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), on the death of the 3rd (1834-1907); after his death accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
