Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Naval Action by Dominic Serres the elder, RA (Auch 1722 – London 1793), signed on a spar (on floating log) bottom right: D.Serres. 1763. A martime view with five British men-of-war, with a frigate and some smaller ships, line abreast, attacking a fleet in harbour, apparently in a European setting. Three enemy flags are flying from a hill, left of centre (one white between two dark blue). A puff of gunfire coming from the centre ship. Green hilly landscape and cliffs in the distance.Darkish sky, overcase grey clouds.
Provenance
Hon. Edmund Phipps posthumous sale, Christie's 25 June 1859, lot 65: bought by Farrer; thence by descent to the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), on the death of the 3rd (1834-1907); after his death accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
