Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Classical Landscape by Gaspard Dughet (Rome 1615 – Rome 1675). A castle on a wooded hill on the left, with trees of green, golden and brown undertones here and there, two trees in the right foreground and two resting figures towards the left one sitting on a boulder, one reclining on the ground.The figure on the boulder is wearing a light golden-brown tunic. The one on the ground is naked apart from a turquoise cloth draped across his lap. In the centre a distant view leads to the sea. Blue sky fading to white light in far distance on right. There is a companion engraving of the mirror image of this painting (NT 851757.2) in the Upper East Gallery at Ickworth.
Provenance
John, Lord Hervey (1696-1743) by 1741 when engraved by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Chatelain (1710 - London 1771); possibly the picture included in the 1819 Valuation as' Poussin, Landscape with Figures, 3 feet 3 inches by 2 feet 5 inches'; exhibited at Royal Academy Winter exhibition in 1875 (165); thence by descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
