Summary
Bronze, The Boxing Ones, by Barry Flanagan (Prestatyn, North Wales 1941 - 2009), 1981. Two large bronze hares raised on their hind legs fighting on a bronze and oak base in the shape of a Latin Cross. This is a unique composition and is one of a family of hares, some leaping, prancing and dancing. The image of Flanagan’s hare first appeared in drawings of 1978. The sculptures were originally made of thin rolls of clay as a coil pot would be produced. This highly individual sculpture shows the playfulness, spontaneity and physical display of hares. The doubled arm creates an increased sense of movement. The artist explained, 'the choice of the hare is really quite a rich and expressive sort of model…The ears, for example, are really able to convey far more than…a grimace on the face of a model.'
