Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Matthew Russell MP of Brancepeth Castle, Co. Durham by Sir George Hayter RA (London 1792 – London 1871), signed and dated bottom left, along with illegible inscription on scroll on table: G. Hayter................London 1819. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, seated in elaborate giltwood armchair with green upholstery, short grey hair, and dressed in black jacket and breeches, white collar and white cravat, his right hand resting on a table with silver inkwell, quills, books and an inscribed open scroll which hangs over side of table. Red curtain to left. His daughter and heiress, Maria, married the 7th Lord Boyne, great-grandfather of Lady Labouchere.
