Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Anna Maria Isabella, Lady Hesketh (1828-1870) by Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878), later inscribed centre left: ANNA MARIA ARABELLA DAU OF THOMAS/ Fermor, 4th Earl of Pomfret and wife/ to sir Thomas Fermor-Hesketh Bart MP. An oval three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, seated, wearing a white dress and coloured shawl. The sitter was the daughter of Thomas Fermor, 4th Earl of Pomfret and his wife Arabella, daughter of Sir Richard Borough. On 10th March 1846 she married Sir Thomas Hesketh. In 1867 on the death without issue of her brother George Fermor, 5th Earl of Pomfret, she inherited the substantial Northamptonshire estates of the Fermor family, including Easton Neston, and her husband altered his name by Royal Licence to Fermor-Hesketh. She died on 25th February 1870.
Provenance
By descent in the Fermor-Hesketh family; offered for sale at the auction organised by Sotheby's at Easton Neston, Northamptonshire, 17-19 May 2005, lot 136; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty with the help of a grant of £2,251 from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund.
