Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Bacchanal with the Drunken Silenus on an Ass by Andrea Locatelli (Rome 1695 – Rome 1741?). This scene shows figures in a woodland setting in classical dress, cavorting around a central figure reclining on the ground in a red toga, to the right an older, grissled man sits astride an ass, being supported by other figures. In the background are classical buildings. Pendant to the Celebration of Flora and Priapus under the Snyders, NT771207. Silenus was first the mentor, than a follower, of Bacchus, and always treated as a burlesque figure, whose triumph is the comic counterpart of his master's. These two paintings are in fine 18th century giltwood frames and have been regilded and adapted to bring them more into conformity with 19th century taste - in this case, by bulking them out with an additional outer moulding.
