Throughout his working life, Lowry was employed full-time as a clerk, rent collector and cashier in Manchester. He studied art at evening school, and gradually became known for his depictions of the cotton mills, coal mines, back-to-back houses and working people of Lancashire. Public recognition of his art was growing by the time he joined the London Group in 1948. There are no ‘matchstalk men’ in this painting by Lowry. Instead, he has created a simple, dramatic composition by contrasting blocks of grey-green grass with a diagonal silver slash of road. It is a study in abstract shapes and colours that deliberately resists picturesque human detail.
