Full description
Oil painting on canvas, Leaves and Tree Trunk, by Mary Potter (Beckenham 1900 - 1983), circa 1955-1960. Mary Potter was a landscape and still life painter who won a scholarship to the Slade School of Art in 1919. She exhibited with the London Group from 1929, becoming a member in 1938. This work shows her distinctive palette of pale, delicate colours. She responded strongly to the light of the Suffolk coast. Mary moved to the Red House, Aldeburgh with her husband (the writer Stephen Potter) in 1951. They sold it to Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, but a studio was built for Mary in the garden and she continued to paint there.
