Summary
Chippendale-style Mantel Mirror. The shaped plate divided into portions by carved columns, scrolls and foliage, the shaped outside frame carved with acanthus foliage, branches and birds, surmounted by writhen vases and sprays of flowers, the pediment in the form of a Pagoda with Lady, surmounted by a winged serpent. 1775-1800.
Provenance
Probably supplied to Henry Arundell, 8th Lord Arundell of Wardour (1740-1808), for Wardour Castle, Wiltshire. Thence by descent at Wardour Castle until sold as Lot 121 at L.W. Arnett's sale at Wardour Castle, Tisbury, 10 September, 1952, where purchased for £190 by Richard Wolheim on behalf of Maud Russell for the Whistler Room, Mottisfont Abbey. Transferred to the National Trust in 1957 with Mottisfont Abbey and Estate by Maud Russell.
