Caption

‘Gussy’, Augusta Frances Anne Hoare, was the only daughter and surviving child of Augusta Frances East and Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt when she was painted in London by Frederic Leighton, who was a friend of her mother, and whom he had painted two years earlier. In this portrait she is only 14 ½ years old and her youth is denoted by the smock she wears over her dress. She later married William John Nettleship Angerstein (d.1892) in 1868 and secondly Colonel J. St Aubyn Hastie (d. 1901) in 1894.

A portrait bust painting of ‘Gussy’, the only daughter and surviving child of Augusta Frances East and Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt. She is in profile to looking to the left, wearing a smock over her dress. It was painted in London by Frederic Leighton, who was a friend of the sitter’s mother, when she was 14 ½ years old. She was later married firstly to William John Nettleship Angerstein (d.1892) in 1868 and, secondly, to Colonel J. St Aubyn Hastie (d. 1901) in 1894.

By inheritance by her first cousin once removed; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
