Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Tatar Horseman by John Augustus Atkinson (London 1775 – 1831), 1805 - 1814. A Tatar soldier in red uniform is mounted on a grey horse carrying a lance in a barren landscape, riding towards the right. Another rides away into the distance with his weapon raised. The artist travelled to Russia with James Walker, the mezzotint engraver, from 1784 - 1802.
Provenance
Acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) either between 1785-87 or 1788-91; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
