Augusta Frances East, wife of Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt (1824-1894) was a friend of the artist. He painted her in 1858 whilst in Paris when he was only 28. It is a sombre portrait. She is standing in a garden next to an orange tree, wearing all black, possibly in mourning, except for the red roses in her hair. Her husband’s uncle had died the year before leaving him as the successor to the baronetcy.

Oil painting on canvas, Augusta Frances East, Lady Hoare (d. 1903) by Sir Frederic, Lord Leighton PRA (Scarborough 1830 - Kensington 1896), 1858. A three-quarter-length portrait of the wife of Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt (1824-1894), who was a friend of the artist. She is shown facing half right, her arms crossed, wearing all black but with red roses in her hair. She stands by an orange tree in a garden with a statue (Venus Anadyomene) to her left in the central background. The artist painted the portrait in Paris when he was only 28.
Provenance
By inheritance by her cousin by marriage; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
