Oil painting on canvas (oval), Cuckoos displacing a Finch's Egg by William Tomkins (London c.1730 – London 1792), circa 1775. A horizontal oval painting of two birds on small trees hovering above a smaller bird next to its nest in a field. A spray of blossom with a nest; two cuckoos perched right, the cuckoo's egg in the small nest at the left, next to the smaller egg of the disconsolate pied wagtail perched on the nest; another of its eggs cast out onto the ground beneath.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
