Summary
Oil painting on panel, Saint John the Baptist Preaching by David Vinckboons (Mechelen 1576 – Amsterdam c.1632), initialled and dated 1614. An assembly of figures, some in Eastern dress, gather in a clearing in a wood to hear Saint John preach. He is standing on a mound in the middle centregound slightly to the left addressing his audience who are mostly on the right. A figure in a an exotic red cloak sits in the immediate foreground parallel to Saint John and a figure, seen from behind, stands next to him drawing the spectator into the scene.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
