Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Group from Rape of the Sabines (after Poussin) by Samuel Woodforde Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817), circa 1812 -17. The picture is a copy of the group in the left foreground of the orignal painting, now in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York by Nicolas Poussin (Les Andeleys, Normandy 1594 – Rome 1665). The background differs from the original in that it is compressed so that the building appears on the right.
Provenance
Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758- 1838) commissioned the artist, in 1812, to copy Poussin's painting whilst it was in Stourhead and subsequently sold in 1883 (Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare , 5th Bt. (1824-1894)) Heirlooms sale; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
