Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Group from Rape of the Sabines (after Poussin) by Samuel Woodforde RA (Ansford 1763 -Ferrara 1817), circa 1812-17. The picture is a copy of the group of warrior, old man, woman and child from the right foreground of the original painting, now in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, but is set in a landscape by Nicolas Poussin (Les Andeleys, Normandy 1594 – Rome 1665).
Provenance
Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758- 1838) commissioned the artist, in 1812, to copy Poussin's painting whilst it was still in the collection at Stourhead and before it was sold in the 1883 (Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt (1824-1894)) Heirlooms sale. Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
