Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Classical Landscape with Sportsmen by Gaspard Dughet (Rome 1615 - Rome 1675), circa 1658/9. A wooded landscape on either side of a path stretches and opens out into a wider view with mountains in the centre distance. Two figures accompanied by a dog are on the path in the right foreground; one is seated on the right and the other to the left is loading a gun.
Provenance
Bought by Horace Mann (1701 - 1786) for Henry Hoare II (1705-85) from the Arnaldi Collection in 1758 and evidently given to his son-in-law; in the collection of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt (1735–1787) at Barn Elms, Bucks. in 1794; seen in house of Henry Arthur Hoare (1804–1873) in St James's Square, London by Gustav Waagen in 1857; brought from Wavendon by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare 6th Bt (1865 - 1947) and Alda Weston, Lady Hoare (d. 1847) between 1894 and 1898; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
