Colt Hoare was a prolific amateur artist and produced a huge number of sketches recording the places he visited on his Grand Tour. For a while he was accompanied on his travels by John ‘Warwick’ Smith who taught him to draw.
Unbound notebook with watercolor, ink and pencil drawings, Stonehenge - 1806, watercolor of beaker shard on cover, other watercolors, ink and pencil drawings and notes in early pages but largely blank,probably by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt.
Given to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
