Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man by Edward Bower (fl. London 1629 – d.London 1667), signed: Bower fecit. A full-length portrait of a man dressed as a cavalier in black slashed doublet and black hose, with white lace cuffs and large collar, leather boots and sword, standing on a terrace with a balustrade joining the plinths of twisted columns, his hat on a table beside him. Traditionally said to be a member of the Fownes family.

In Dunster Castle 1910 inventory, p.38 as in Outer Hall; and thence by descent; previously on loan, 1975; gift of Lt-Col Geoffrey Walter Fownes Luttrell (1919 – 2007) to the National Trust in 1981
