Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Religious Allegory with Sir Thomas Copley (d.1584) and family, English School, 1625. The bottom third of the picture is occupied by a later inscription to the effect that the allegory was composed by the learned Sir Thomas Copley, Baron of Wells and Haw, and was approved by the theological doctors of the Academy of Paris in 1580. It was improved by Lady Joanna de Copley, daughter of Sir Thomas and wife of Parter de Martyigny. The text ends with the exhortation to pray for the soul of the author, and the date of the insciption, 1625. In the rectangle above the inscription the family of Thomas Copley kneel at pries-dieux in the lower spandrels formed by the circular allegorical scene Sir Thomas and his sons at the right, his wife and daughters at the left; their coats of arms are above them respectively in the upper spandrels - Copley and Hoo, and Luttrell and Ryce.
