Summary
Oil painting on panel, King Henry VIII (1491-1547), after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543). This portrait is a copy of the Whitehall fresco by Holbein in traditional posture. William Sandys, who was created First Baron Sandys of The Vyne in 1523 and was appointed Lord Chamberlain in 1526, was the builder of The Vyne, where he entertained Henry VIII a number of time. The Vyne remained in the hands of the Sandys family until 1653 when it was sold by the 6th Baron Sandys to Chaloner Chute, Speaker of the House of Commons.

Mentioned in 1754 inventory as being in the Study Closet; in the list "temp. Anthony [recte John] Chute", as in the [Oak] Gallery; in The Topographer, 1789: "called Holbein, but very flat and inferior" ;1842 Inventory.; 1880s Notes, in the Chapel Parlour; bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956)
