Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Italian Landscape by Johann Heinrich Müntz (Mulhouse 1727 – Kassel 1798). A peasant boy and goats in the foreground, a classical monument at the right, a Colosseum and a large tree at the left; in the background, buildings on the far side of a lake.
Provenance
Originally installed as an overmantel in the Tapestry Room, in a frame subsequently converted by Wiggett Chute into the chimneypiece of the Large Drawing Room, when this was moved to the Saloon (Dining Room) as an overmantel; Chaloner Chute's Notes for a History of The Vyne, 1880s include it under the room, by then known as the Chapel Parlour: "Colosseum and Ruins (Muntz) over fire"; prior to 1842 the continuous oak overmantel (allowing no room for a painting) now in the Tapestry Room was here; some time after that date (see his Reminiscences) Wiggett Chute removed that and revealed the chimneypiece, and, as shown in Martha Chute's watercolour illustrated in Chaloner Chute's, A History of The Vyne in Hampshire, 1888, a copy of Guido's Aurora hung in this position); that was then removed, and the present picture substituted (1880s Notes), only for the Aurora to be reinstated, and then removed again; bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956)
