Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Rocky Landscape with a Hermit by Johann Heinrich Müntz (Mulhouse 1727 – Kassel 1798), 1763. A pastiche landscape by Muntz after Paul Brill, a Northern artist influenced by the Italian landscape, with a hermit sheltering in a grotto at the left beside a bank on which is a classical building partly hidden by trees. A wide plain stretches into the distance with rocks at the right and two figures and cattle in foreground. Its companion (NT: 719390) is based more on Gaspard Poussin.
