Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Francis Lewis (Louis) Hugonin (d. 1755), manner of Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1656/9 – London 1743), circa 1740. A three-quarter-length portrait of Francis Lewis (Louis) Hugonin, facing, right, wearing a full bottomed wig, blue velvet coat and white stock, indicating with his right hand men of war in the background. Francis died in 1755 and his wife in 1767. They were ancestors of Francis Hugonin who married Joan Pennyman the Colonel’s first cousin in 1925. Francis Hugonin Snr left Switzerland to work in India in 1700 and emigrated to England in about 1720; the east Indian in the background of his portrait may be a reference to his trading activities. These two portraits (of people living when this house was built) were brought to Ormesby Hall in 1968 after Lt Colonel Hugonin died and Mrs Hugonin moved from Stainton House to a smaller house in Stokesley.
