Oil painting on canvas, Louisa Barbara Mansell, Lady Vernon (1733-1786) by Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788), 1759-60. Half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a red dress beneath a lace shawl, black ribbon choker with pears around her neck and a stiffened pearl and net headdress. First wife of George Venables Vernon, 2nd Lord Vernon (1735-1813).
Provenance
First recorded in the collection of Matthew Fortescue (1786-1852), Belvedere, Dublin, in 1835; by descent to his eldest daughter, Mary (b.1818), who married Captain Frederick J. Isacke (d.1885); her descedants' anonymous sale, Christie's, 27 April 1917 (120) withdrawn; M. Fortescue Isacke; Lt. Col. J.T. Edmeades; purchased by Knoedler in December 1913 for £1,755; purchased by George, 8th Baron Vernon (1888-1915) in December 1913 for £2,100; by descent; left to the National Trust in August 2000 under the terms of the will of John Lawrance Venables Vernon, 10th Lord Vernon (1923-2000).
