Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Warren (1540-1587), aged 40, British (English) School, inscribed: front: AETATIS SUÆ 40. ANO DOM: 1580 - 18th century. A half-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a black embroidered doublet with large white ruff, a double chain on his breast, and wearing a thumb ring on his right hand which is across his body. A coat of arms in the top right. Of Poynton aged 40, 2nd son of Sir Edward Warren of Poynton, Cheshire. Married Margaret Molyneux daughter of Sir Richard Molyneux of Setton, Lancashire. The family descended from a bastard son of the last Warenne, Earl of Surry. In 1826 the Poynton estate passed to the Vernons by marriage (Frances Maria Warren, Lady Vernon wife of the 4th Lord Vernon inherited the estate on the death of Elizabeth Harriet Warren, Lady Bulkeley).

Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
