Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Charles Shirley, 3rd Bt (1623-1646), style of Robert Walker (c.1600 – London c.1659). A three-quarter-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, he has dark brown shoulder-length natural hair, and is dressed in armour, his right hand wearing a gauntlet is holding a baton by his side, his left hand is resting on the pommel of his sword, his helmet with a grey plume is on a table on the right. Vague distant view through a window on the right. Sir Charles Shirley, 3rd Bt (1623 - 1646), he died unmarried. He was the elder brother of Sir Robert Shirley, whose daughter Dorothy was George Vernon's second wife and so uncle to George (builder of the house) by marriage.

Vernon collection transferred to the Treasury in 1967 following death of 9th Lord Vernon, and transferred to The National Trust in 1967
