Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of Military Remains at Orford Ness, Suffolk, by John Wonnacott (b. London 1940), c. 1994. A view of a laboratory on the former military site at Orford Ness, a shingle spit on the Suffolk coast. The highly strategic area was used for secret military testing through both First and Second World Wars and the Cold War. The structure at centre housed a centrifuge that subjected bombs to G-forces while 'pagoda' in the background at left was built to test the effect of vibration and temperature stress on atomic bombs.
