Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Captain Thomas Massingberd, RN (b.1763) by James Northcote, RA (Plymouth 1746 – London 1831), signed and dated, bottom left: J. Northcote Pinxt/1787. A half-length portrait of a young man, facing,head to left in naval uniform. Born in 1763 he was the second son of Thomas Meux Massingberd and Elizabeth Emmerson. He married Elizabeth Waterhouse and lived at Candlesbury House,Lincs. and Beckingham House. The picture is badly damaged and restored,but the signature appears to be that of Northcote and it is probably by him. However it is not listed in Gwynn's Memorials of an 18th Century painter,1898.

1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
