Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir William Massingberd, 3rd Bt (1677-1723), British (English) School, circa 1700. As a young man,half-length to right,head facing, in linen coat, white lace cravat and long wig. son of Sir William Massingberd, 2nd Baronet, whom he succeeded in 1719. He died unmarried and the estate passed to his sister, Elizabeth who married Thomas Meux. At his death the Baronetcy and direct line became extinct. Since then the property has passed through the maze of female heirs.
Provenance
1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
