Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Thomas Philip Robinson, Lord Grantham, later 2nd Earl de Grey of Wrest KG, PC, FRS (1781-1859), attributed to Emma Eleanora Kendrick (1788 – London 1871). c.1815-20. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the left, head to the right, gazing to the right, in 'Vandide' dress (buff doublet, deep lace collar, blue cloak). Pale blue eyes, short ginger hair, fresh complexion, aged about 35. Orange background. Reverse of frame engraved, Thomas Philip Earl de Grey/D.1859. Pair with FLO.MI.476. The sitter is in 'Vandike' dress and sports the short haircut popularised by the military in the Peninsular Wars. Thomas Philip Robinson was the eldest son of Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham (1738-1786); heir of William Weddell of Newby Hall, whose name he took in 1803 and nephew and heir of Amabel Countess de Grey (1751-1833), of Wrest Park. He married in 1805, Lady Henrietta Frances Cole, 4th daughter of the 1st Earl of Enniskillen. As an architect (including of Wrest Park), he became first President of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1841 to 1844, when he was made a knight of the Garter. He and his wife had two daughters, the eldest of whom succeeded to his maternal barony of Lucas, his younger brother Frederick, created Viscount Goderich and then Earl of Ripon in his own right, succeeded to his paternal barony of Granthan.
