Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Moonlight Battle of St Vincent, 26th January 1780, after Richard Paton (London 1717 – London 1791), inscribed, on modern label: THE SPANISH SHIP St. DOMINGO BLOWN UP DURING ACTION WITH THE SPANISH FLEET OFF ST VINCENT, 26th JANUARY, 1780. This is enlarged contemporary copy of a painting in the Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The action when Rodney in the 'Formidable' on his way to relieve Gibralter encountered the Spanish Fleet under Admiral Langara. Soon after midnight the Sapnish flagship, Santo Domingo, blew up off Cape St Vincent. The battle was brought to an end, Rodney having captured six enemy ships, when a gale arose.
Provenance
Acquired with the house when it was bought from Lord Rodney by the 1st Lord Cawley in 1901. (For further details, see Country Life, CXVI, December 1954, p.2182). Purchased by the National Trust from John Francis Cawley, 4th Baron Cawley in 1997.
