Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Judge William Noel (1695-1762) by Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), circa 1820. A three-quarter-length portrait, of a mature man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white wig, gold embroidered blue coat with lace frills, and black robe, left hand in waistcoat. Table with books at the right. Judge William Noel, 1695-1762, son of Sir John Noel of Kirkby Mallory; eminent lawyer, MP for Stamford 1722-47, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Horace Walpole thought him 'a pompous man of little solidity'. He married Elizabeth Trollope and was father to Mary, 2nd wife of Thomas Hill, therefore grandfather to 1st Lord Berwick. In, 1898 list, p.14: [J. [sic] Hudson added in manuscript] Subject. Gentleman [Judge Noel added in manuscript] in powdered wig, blue and gold embroidered coat, and black robe; in May 1913 Attingham inventory; in 1925 Attingham catalogue; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947)
