Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Frances Petre, Lady Apsley (1645-1698), attributed to John Hayls (fl. 1651 – London 1679), 1675. A painted oval half-length portrait, turned to right, wearing dark decollete dress, a blue cloak over her right shoulder, pearl necklace and earrings. Her brown hair falling in ringlets. Frances Petre, Lady Apsley, (1645-1698), daughter and heiress of John Petre of Bowhay, Devon; married Sir Allen Apsley the younger (1616-1683), Royalist leader and falconer to Charles II. Treasurer of the Household of James, Duke of York. Their eldest son Thomas Wentworth, (1672-1739) was created 3rd Earl of Strafford in 1711 and his daughter Henrietta Wentworth married Henry Vernon of Hilton, the father of Anna Vernon, Lady Berwick (1744-1797), wife of Noel Hill, 1st Lord Berwick (1745-1789). Their daughter Isabella Apsley married Sir William Wentworth.
